Natural Playground Tree Fort

The Tree Fort transforms natural timber into an open-ended commercial playground experience where young children can gather, explore, imagine, and create their own adventures. Six substantial timber poles rise toward a central gathering point, creating the visual character of a woodland shelter or primitive fort while leaving the play experience intentionally open to interpretation.

Designed as a home base for thinking, planning, dreaming, and social play, the Tree Fort gives children a recognizable destination within a natural playground environment. It can become a fort, campsite, woodland hideaway, meeting place, pretend home, or starting point for imaginative adventures.

Black Locust Timber Construction

The Tree Fort is constructed using Black Locust timber, a naturally durable wood species well suited to demanding outdoor environments. Black Locust is recognized for its resistance to decay and its ability to provide excellent longevity even when used in applications involving soil contact.

The natural variation of each timber gives every installation its own character. Differences in grain, knots, shape, taper, and surface appearance are part of the material rather than manufactured uniformity, helping create a playground environment that feels connected to the natural landscape.

Natural Timber Checking

Natural checking, or surface cracking, is a normal characteristic of solid timber as the wood adjusts to changing outdoor moisture and environmental conditions. These natural checks contribute to the authentic appearance of the timber and, when occurring as normal seasoning checks, are not an indication that the wood has lost its structural integrity.

Public Playground Applications

The Tree Fort is designed for public-use playground environments and is identified in the product documentation as complying with ASTM F1487. ASTM F1487 establishes safety and performance requirements for public playground equipment serving children within the 2 through 12 year age range. The Tree Fort is specifically designed for children ages 2–5.

Natural Play Design

Unlike highly prescribed playground activities that direct children toward one specific use, the Tree Fort provides an intentionally simple natural form. This allows children to determine what the structure represents and how it becomes part of their play. The result is a flexible play element that can support changing games, stories, social groups, and imaginative experiences throughout the day.

Natural timber components can also be incorporated alongside conventional commercial playground equipment, allowing designers to combine nature-inspired play with traditional steel, recycled plastic, climbing, sliding, sensory, or social play environments.
