Secure Bicycle Rack Design
At a minimum, a good bike rack should allow both the bicycle frame and at least one wheel to be secured with a U-style lock. This allows the cyclist to secure important parts of the bicycle directly to the rack rather than relying on the wheel alone.
For orderly bicycle parking, the rack should also provide at least two points of contact with the bicycle. Supporting the bike at more than one location helps keep it upright and properly positioned while parked.
Characteristics of a Good Bicycle Rack
Effective commercial bicycle racks support secure locking while providing sufficient contact with the bicycle. Different rack shapes and parking configurations can accomplish this when the bicycle frame and wheel can be positioned securely against the rack.

Bike Rack Designs to Avoid
Bicycle racks that cradle only the front wheel should be avoided. Front-wheel-only racks do not provide the frame and wheel locking arrangement of a U-lock compatible rack and may also cause damage to bicycles.
Supporting only a bicycle wheel also provides less support for the complete bicycle than a rack that contacts the bicycle at multiple locations.
Understanding Wave-Style Bicycle Racks
Wave-style bicycle racks can accommodate U-style locks, but they do not provide two points of contact with parked bicycles. For this reason, the wave configuration is not considered an ideal bicycle parking arrangement when compared with racks that provide both secure locking and multiple points of bicycle support.
Choosing a Commercial Bicycle Rack
When evaluating a commercial bicycle rack, consider more than the number of bicycles that can be parked. Rack design affects bicycle security, stability, organization, and the cyclist's ability to use a common U-style lock effectively.
